Ukrainian symphonic cycle. The symphonies of Boris Lyatoshynsky. The latest from Sarathy Kowar. Kamancello. Kayhan Kalhor and Shujaat Hussein Khan.

I cannot express how grateful I am to all of my listeners who have stepped up and contributed to our annual funding drive! Today we continue the symphonic cycle of Ukrainian composer Boris Lyatoshynsky with his 4th symphony. This work from 1963 reflects the mature voice of Lyatoshynky and is perhaps my favourite of his five symphonies. Brilliant extremes of textures and wonderful orchestration, which sadly seems appropriate for Ukraine today. Violence and struggle underpin much of the symphony, contrasted with a peaceful chorale with bells that makes its appearance in the 2nd movement. The peace returns in the coda of the finale, a beautiful, peaceful ending after such intense struggle. You can listen to the previous three symphonies on the previous programs: https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/57119.html https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/57431.html https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/57774.html

Kamancello - Of Shadows - Independent Canadian
We continue with Sarathy Korwar's latest "Kalak" which was just released last Friday. Sarathy describes it as "an Indo-futurist manifesto - in rhythmic step with the past and the present, it sets out to describe a route forward. KALAK celebrates a rich South Asian culture of music and literature, which resonates with spirituality and community, while envisaging a better future from those building blocks." We will hear a number of tracks from this new album.

I love this Ghazal piece so much. The tabla enters about 19 minutes in, just in time for a long closing coda for the piece. Eight glorious minutes for ending music. Transcendent.
