| Mozart's Requiem is a problematic masterpiece. His final, incomplete work, it contains so much of his genius in most dramatic form. However, the conventional completed version by his student Franz Xaver Sussamayer--hired by Mozart's widow to complete the work in 1792--is ultimately disappointing. Sussamayer was far from Mozart's equal. There have been better completions written in the past few decades, but the standard Sussamyer version is the most often performed and recorded. The NAC Orchestra is presenting one of the better completions tonight! The orchestra is joined by La Chapelle de Québec and its founder Bernard Labadie to perform the 1993 completion by Robert Levin. It mostly takes as a starting point the Sussamayer version, but corrects errors and improves orchestration and adds an "Amen" fugue after the Lacrimosa which reflects 18th century Requiem settings, and which also creates a structure where every section of the Requiem is completed by a fugue. This version is far more satisfying than the standard Sussamayer version (which, in my opinion, should never be performed or recorded again). It is a really wonderful opportunity to hear this Levin version live. Tonight at the NAC:
