First new album from T.S. Monk in 20 years; Les Filles de Illighadad live in concert; Andrew Paul Macdonald with his quintet for electric guitar and more!
Today we will hear the recording of Les Filles de Illighadad live in concert at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn in 2019. A fantastic set which makes me thrilled to see them here in Ottawa next Wednesday at the Jazz festival!

However, for the first set, we will start with some Jazz from another live album from drummer T.S Monk who leads a sextet with Helen Sung piano, Willie Williams tenor sax, Patience Higgins alto sax, Josh Evans trumpet, and Kenny Davis on bass. This is T.S. Monk's first album in almost 20 years and features music recorded in Bern, Switzerland in 2016 and in Harlem in 2014. T.S Monk has had an off-and-on relationship with jazz. Being the only son of Thelonious Monk, he had a very musical upbringing, and having decided on drums at the age of 15, his father made a call to Ark Blakey to ask for a set of drums and another call to Max Roach to tell him he was "sending 'the kid' over for lessons". After five years, his father came home and asked him if he was ready to play. T.S. Monk accompanied his father occasionally until 1975 when Thelonious Monk retired. T.S. Monk pursued a musical career along with his sister Barbara, in R&B, Soul, Funk--the popular musics of Black American youth. In the 90's T.S. Monk returned to jazz and started performing and recording in a sextet, his preferred ensemble size. T.S. Monk has performed and recorded many of his father's compositions, but on this album, there are originals from T.S. Monk and a couple of other band members, as well two from Randy Weston, one from Jymie Merrit and a classic from Miles Davis.
We will hear the three pieces recorded live in Bern, Switzerland. Starting with a composition from T.S. Monk, followed by one from pianist Helen Sung, then trumpeter Josh Evans. |

We follow T.S. Monk with "Restless City" by Canadian composer and electric guitarist Andrew Paul Macdonald. This work is inspired by the piano quintets of Schumann, Brahms, and Dvorak, and also the jazz world of Bebop giants Charlie Parker, Tadd Dameron, and Thelonious Monk. This work for electric guitar and string quartet is in three movements, each movement dedicated to one of those three jazz giants. The first movement tries to capture the spirit of Parker, the second movement uses a motive from "If You Could See Me Now" which Dameron wrote for Sarah Vaughan, the third movement is a set of variations on "Straight No Chaser". |
