African guitars! Vieux Farka Touré's new album, Bombino live in concert, Charlie Haden and Carla Bley and more!
Vieux Farka Touré has just released his sixth album, and his first for World Circuit, an important milestone for him because most of his father's albums were released on World Circuit. He recorded this album in his home studio in Bamako and entitled it "Les Racines", so-called because he returns to his Songhai roots for this album. He gathered a tremendous group of Malian musicians including Madou Traoré on flute, Kandia Fa on ngoni, Souleymane Kane on calabash, and Madou Sidike Diabaté on kora.
We will also hear from Nigerien guitarist Bombino from his double lp "Live in Amsterdam". We will have a chance next Thursday to see him live in Ottawa as he performs at the Bluesfest!

| Charlie Haden and Carla Bley formed the Liberation Music Orchestra in 1969 and recorded an album that year with experimental jazz arrangements by Carla Bley of revolutionary Spanish Civil War songs. In 1983 Haden and Bley recorded a second album with more arrangements by Carla Bley, this time of revolutionary songs from El Salvador, Chile, Portugal, as well as the Spanish Civil War. Besides Charlie Haden and Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Michael Mantler, Paul Motian, and Dewey Redman all returned for the second album along with six new members. We will hear the first side of this amazing album. |
