The great conductor and Mahlerian interpreter Bruno Walter first heard Mahler and his 1st symphony in June of 1894 in Weimer when Walter was only 17 years old. Water was already a professional musician and worked as a coach at the Cologne Opera. Walter got to meet Mahler later in 1894 when he was hired by the composer to work as his assistant at the Hamburg Opera. Mahler and Walter would play much orchestral music at the piano together including Mahler's 1st symphony. Bruno Walter was engaged to transcribe piano duet "reductions" of Mahler's first two symphonies. This was very common procedure throughout the 19th century as many musicians and amateurs would get to know orchestral works through their piano duet or two piano transcriptions. His piano duet transcription of Mahler's first symphony may not quite achieve the transformative heights of Liszt's solo piano transcriptions of Beethoven's symphonies, but he was a brilliant musician with an extremely sensitive ear for Mahler's music, which we know from his incomparable recordings of Mahler many decades later. We hear the piano duet transcription of Mahler's first symphony, which is being performed tonight by the NAC Orchestra. I can never hear too much Mahler, in any form!

30 years since this album came out, and probably 28 years since I first heard it, which began my lifelong love of Moroccan music and culture, and double-reeded instruments. |
