The new cross cultural collaboration from Senegalese kora player Ablaye Cissoko and French accordionist Cyrille Brotto; the latest from Japanese pianist-composer Koki Nakano; Classics on vinyl; our continuing journey through Niger.
Continuing our journey through Niger with the double LP Folk music of the Sahel vol. 1: Niger. Niger, like most African nations, contains many ethnicities. We will hear one side from each of the two lp's which comprise this fantastic snapshot of Nigerien music which Hisham Mayet recorded between 2004 and 2014 over the course of six expeditions to Niger. We start with side C today with Tuareg, Hausa, Zarma and Fulani music!
Don't forget we get a rare chance to hear Nigerien music in person later this month at the Jazzfest with Les Filles de Illighadad who will be performing at the festival on the 29th!

As well, we will hear from the new collaboration by Senegalese kora master Ablaye Cissoko and French accordionist Cyrille Brotto. The kora-accordion combination works surprisingly well! Also the new album from Japanese pianist-composer Koki Nakano and Classics on vinyl!

This track by Ablaye Cissoko and Cyrille Brotto doesn't feature the kora, only the accordion with Cissoko's singing, but it's one of my favourites from the new album! |

Great Classical recordings on vinyl courtesy of Donald and Patricia Cranstone. The Tannhauser Overture and Debussy's "La Mer" both very much contribute to "Oceanic Feeling" which was coined by the French author Romain Rolland to refer to "a sensation of eternity", a feeling of "being one with the external world as a whole", and which inspired Koki Nakano's new album. |
