Spinning tunes from Niger, Shakti, Keith Jarrett, and wherever the winds blow
Over the next four weeks, we will hear a lot of music from Niger. For several reasons, I have a couple of fantastic Nigerien lps which I have not featured on the show before, and the wonderful Nigerien trio Les Filles de Illighadad will be performing at the Ottawa Jazzfest on Wednesday June 29th
(https://ottawajazzfestival.com/artists/les-filles-de-illighadad/)
They are the first female Tuareg guitar group and amazing musicians, we heard their most recent album, a live recording from New York City last year
(https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/52762.html). Very excited for a chance to hear them live!
The Tuareg are a minority in Niger, which, like most African nations, contains many ethnicities. We will hear one side from each of the two lp's which comprise this fantastic snapshot of Nigerien music which Hisham Mayet recorded between 2004 and 2014 over the course of six expeditions to Niger. We actually start with side B today! With Hausa, Zarma, Songhai, and Tuareg music. |

Just when I thought I was familiar with all the varied journeys of Keith Jarrett, I discovered this album, and realized I was not familiar with Keith Jarrett's American Quartet with Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman, and Paul Motian. On hearing it, I realize I have been missing one of the greatest expressions of Keith Jarrett. This album was live improvisation recorded in 1976 at Theater am Kornmarkt in Bregenz, Austria. Genius! Proving the miraculous improvisation of these musicians, part of the music was "accidental". After Dewey Redman's first appearance playing a melody, he walks off the stage, Jarrett thought he was changing his reed, but he disappeared and missed his next entry. Keith Jarrett continued to vamp for seven minutes before Redman reappeared to cheers and continued. Apparently, he had ventured off to find a glass of wine! Despite the missed cues, the music is still perfection! The American quartet was only active from 1973-1976 and this was their second and final recording for ECM. |
