Live in studio! Farewell to Shivkumar Sharma; spinning vinyl.

Back live in the studio again this week! Similar to last week there is no set playlist, just a stack of vinyl to take the music wherever the mood leads, with the exception of a farewell to the great Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who died last week aged 84. Born in 1938, Shivkumar Sharma learned to play the tabla and sing from his father, first performing on the tabla at age 12. When he was 14, his father gifted him a santoor. The santoor was mostly unknown in India, only used in Kashmir in a local classical style called Sufiana Mausiqi and in folk music. The santur is not well suited to Hindustani music because it is played with hammers so there is no way to play meend, the gliding between notes and it is also difficult to sustain notes. Shivkumar Sharma was hesitant at first, but took to the instrument and first presented it at age 17, in 1955 at a festival in Mumbai. He was received rapturously by the audience. That auspicious beginning was short lived. Over the next few years, as he tried to establish himself as an artist, many critics urged him to abandon the santoor. He eventually proved its worth in Hindustani music. His 1967 recording "Call of the Valley", with his almost exact contemporaries bansuri master Hariprasad Chaurasia, and slide guitarist Brij Bushan Kabra, proved to be very popular. It established their careers and their instruments, and they went on to extremely long, successful careers. Sharma and Chaurasia would collaborate again many times. "Call of the Valley" is structured as a suite following a shepherd's day in a Kashmiri valley. Each of the suite's five movements is built on a raga which is traditionally tied to a time of day, moving from dawn to dusk. "Call of the Valley" was never out of print in India, and in 1995 it was issued on CD for international audiences by EMI. This recording was perhaps the first Indian classical music I heard and which started a very deep, continuing love for Indian music.

A big fat Mingus Moment to celebrate the recent 100th year of his birth, April 22nd 1922. One of Mingus' most overtly political works "Fables of Faubus" which uses cutting sarcasm to mock the infamous governor of Arkansas who in 1957 called out the National Guard to prevent the entry of nine Black children into Little Rock Central High School. They were prevented for several weeks until President Eisenhower signed an executive order taking control of the National Guard and ordering them to allow the children to enter the school. "Fables of Faubus" was released in 1959 on his album "Mingus Ah Um" in an 8 minute version. We hear a nearly 30 minute live version from his 1964 concert in Paris.
I should also mention my program with the complete 1960 Antibes Mingus concert is still available on-demand:

Youssou N'Dour will be in Montreal Wednesday night at the Place des Arts with his band Super Étoile de Dakar. I believe it is his only stop in Canada before one or two shows in the US then he's off to Europe. I am trying to figure out how I can go...

My sisyphean struggle with the silence detector continues! I am playing Call of the Valley from CD, and the CD players in studio here have not been used in over 2 years! Took a while to wake it up!

Mingus' "Faubus" is fantastic. Is this the recording that features Eric Dolphy? If so, my favourite tune is "Meditation on Integration" (also political). Well worth a spin, anytime. And congrats on getting back in the studio; sounds great over the air!
