Vicariously lived journey through Portugal

Tony Daye, a long time host and volunteer at CKCU and founder of This Island Earth on Sundays, has been travelling through Portugal the past few weeks. I have had the pleasure of living vicariously through the amazing photographs he's been sharing of Lisbon, hiking the mountainous island of Madeira, and of Funchal. Tony and his wife Ellen are tremendous photographers (six of their photos make up the collage for today's show) and they have shown what a spectacular country Portugal is! So today I add a Lusophone soundtrack to their visuals, with music from Portugal and the Lusophone world: Angola, Cabo Verde, and Brazil.
We begin with a Fado singer from an older generation. Fernanda Baptista was born in 1919 and lived until 2008. It is followed by the extremely sweet and delicious Ano Bobo Quartet.

The wonderful Portuguese pianist and composer José Vianna Da Motta was the last surviving pupil of Franz Liszt. Born in 1868, he studied with Liszt in 1885 and died in 1948 after a long career as a virtuoso pianist and composer. He was instrumental to Portuguese musical life as director of the Lisbon Conservatory from 1919 to 1938. We heard several of his piano works in the first set recorded by the composer in 1928 and now the premiere recording of his 1905 piano concerto from the fabulous Romantic Piano Concerto series on Hyperion. We bookend the concerto with two 6-part Motets by two late Renaissance Portuguese composers.
