The latest from Montreal jazz pianist and composer Yves Léveillé. Piano duo Luboshotz and Nemenoff. Verdi.
We will start today with a brand new album from Montreal-based jazz pianist and composer Yves Léveillé. His latest album "L'Échelle du Temps" features unusual instrumentation with piano and a string quintet with Lizann Gervais and Olivier Thouin on violins, François Vallières on viola, Émilie Girard-Charest on cello, and Étienne Lafrance on doublebass. Richly textured and joyful music.
We will also hear from a new collection from Marston records, a purveyor of rare recordings from a "golden age" of pianists and singers mostly from the 1920's-50's. This collection features Russian emigré husband and wife team Pierre Luboshutz and Genia Nemenoff. They were both from Jewish-Russian families and both their families were part of a long tradition, which continues to this day, of artistic and cultural elite fleeing repressive authoritarian rule in Russia. Luboshutz and Nemenoff met at the Paris conservatory and they ended up in the New York City where they married in 1931. They officially debuted the Luboshutz-Nemenoff piano duo in 1937 and toured widely through North and South America and Europe. They also made quite a few recordings starting in 1939 and continuing through the 1940's and a few in the early 60's. We will hear a live recording of a very obscure American composer, Harl Mcdonald and his Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra; a recording from 1944 with the composer conducting.

I had never heard of Harl Mcdonald (1899-1955) before encountering his work on this new collection. A very enjoyable work with a great jazz-inflected Mexican dance Juarezca for the concluding movement. |

The Met Live in HD is continuing this Saturday with their new production of Verdi's "Don Carlo". It is the second Verdi opera this season, but we missed the January presentation of "Rigoletto" due to the lockdown. "Don Carlo" is a tale of forbidden love during the Spanish Inquisition. Here is a small taste of this grand dramatic opera, the final scene from Act III and the first two scenes from Act IV including the ominous entrance of the Grand Inquisitor. The Met Live in HD is a terrific way to experience opera, the next best thing to seeing it in person. It is showing at several local cinemas. Information here:
