New Fanfare Ciocarlia! Catching up on 2021 No Format releases. Philip Glass' "Akhnaten".

One of my favourite bands, the incredible Fanfare Ciocarlia, Romanian Roma brass band-extraordinaire, has a brand new album out! "It Wasn't Hard To Love You" is their 10th album and also their 25th anniversary album. I've had the tremendous fortune to see them three times, in Montreal, Toronto, and here in Ottawa. We will start with a few cuts from the new album. I have also been catching up on the 2021 releases from French label No Format. There are three releases I have not featured before. The first is "Udondolo" from Urban Village, a group from Soweto who play music drawing on many different styles of South African music. The second is "Shapes of the Fall" from English born French musician Piers Faccini. It's full of delicate songs with some surprises and collaborations. The third, "Rhapsodic" by French musician Nicolas Repac, is probably the most unusual. He uses samples from the large archive of French ethnomusicologist Charles Duvelle, who headed Ocora's music label in the 60's and 70's making and releasing field recordings from all over the globe. He did this again in the late 90's as the Collection Prophet. Nicolas Repac mixes samples from this wide world of music with electronics, resulting in unique creations, such as a mix of music from South Pacific islands with music from Burkino Faso. Lastly, we will hear a miraculous song from Ballake Sissoko's recent album. I have spun it many times with no apologies!

In the second half the of the program, we will hear the first act of Philip Glass' spectacular opera "Akhnaten" in a new live recording from the Metropolitan Opera-I believe only the second complete recording. I saw this performance in the cinema in 2019 and it quickly became one of my favourite operas. "Akhnaten" is transcendent and exquisitely captures the immense chasm of time which separates Ancient Egypt (~1350 BC for Akhnaten) and our time. It is sung in Egyptian, Akkadian, Hebrew, with some commentary in English. It is a truly magical experience, I wish I could play the entire opera, but we will hear all three acts over three shows. Act I takes place at the start of Akhnaten's reign with the death of his father, Amenhotep III and coronation of Akhnaten. Typical of Glass' operas, there is no real narrative story like conventional opera, this is more about evoking the ritual, magic, and mystery of this iconoclastic Pharoah.
