Deep listening from Iceland, Canada, Argentina. Sun Ra "In Some Far Place" part IV.

We begin today's show with a set that will really reward deep listening. Best lying comfortably with good speakers or headphones and generous volume. We will start with "Caeli" by the Icelanders Bara Gisladottir and Skuli Sveerrisson. Gisladottir is a double bassist and composer who works a lot in avant-garde and improvised music. Sverrisson is also a bassist, though he usually plays electric bass. On this two hour album they indulge in deep improvisations with the two basses and electronics. Music that is primal and elemental, sometimes menacing, mournful and always beautiful. I've been sinking into this music often since it was released. "Primal and elemental" accurately describes the music of Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir as well. Nature inspires much of her music, but it is a craggy, volcanic, windswept, sometimes even dangerous nature, yet grand and beautiful. The hard-to-find first album dedicated solely to her music from 2011 was reissued this year. Amongst these Icelandic peaks and depths we hear some mournful and haunting Kamancello.

We continue with the final side from the never-before-released recording "In Some Far Place - Roma '77" put out by Strut Records in 2016 as an RSD special which features Sun Ra in a more intimate trio setting, with Sun Ra on piano, organ and synthesizer, Luqman Ali on drums and some occasional vocals from Thomas Thaddeus. The final four pieces in the concert were all standards.

Just joining in, a tad late, alas. Loving it already. Deep, mixed with words like volcanic, bass improv, dangerous , haunting... What could possibly go wrong?! Alas, i do still have some chores, so will need to catch up in full headphone glory later on ... thanks to OnDemand time travel.
