Afel Bocoum's new album; the latest from Sarathy Korwar ; the latest from Sahel Sounds Music from Saharan WhatsApp and lots more!
Malian musician Afel Bocoum begins today's show with his brand new release. Bocoum shares the same hometown, Niafunké, as Ali Farka Toure and began his career at 13 playing with Ali Farka in 1968. He formed his own group in the early 80's and only had his first international release in 1999 (also on World Circuit). Over two decades later comes "Lindé", his second release on World Circuit. The new album features several guest musicians including what must be one of the last recordings by Tony Allen, as well as some extremely tasteful trombone from Jamaican Rocksteady and Reggae pioneer Vin Gordon, kora from Madou Sidiki Diabate and many other Malian musicians. It's been a long wait for a new album from Afel Bocoum and I am very happy to say it is a terrific album!
We will also hear from Sarathy Korwar's brand new EP "Otherland" which was released in limited vinyl edition for Record Store Day. It features a couple of remixes and two originals with some fantastic brass and guests Kushal Gaya, Zia Ahmed and others.
We also hear the latest monthly installment from Sahel Sounds' Music from Saharan WhatsApp with Nigerien keyboard player Hama. He plays Nigerien folk music transcribed for synthesizer with some techno and hip-hop influences. This August WhatsApp issue was recorded solo late night in his home.
