Ibrahim Maalouf's "Levantine Symphony no. 1"; music from Djibouti, Somalia, Mali, Cuba and more!
We begin today with Ibrahim Maalouf's "Levantine Symphony no. 1" from 2018. The French-Lebanese trumpeter and composer wanted to create a work as a Hymn to the Levant which draws upon both Western and Lebanese music. I find Jazz is the largest influence in this work. This symphony works more like a suite with an introduction, three multi-movement parts and a finale. It was recorded with the Paris Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Ibrahim Maalouf who also performs on his wonderful quarter-tone trumpet--the real highlight of this work. A very joyous and optimistic work.
