The brand new album from Toronto-based artist Shahriyar Jamshidi; Mory Kante's final album; Music from Saharan WhatsApp vol. 6
Today we will begin with a full play of the brand new release from Shahriyar Jamshidi, a Toronto-based kamanche player of Kurdish-Iranian background. His new solo album "My Sunset Land Rojava" is inspired by the area popularly known as Rojava, which is the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria and particularly the Kurdish women who have fought and sacrificed so much for the independence of this zone in recent years. He chose the art work of Turkish-Kurdish artist Zehra Dogan for the album cover. The music ranges from fierce and bold in its opening piece a tribute to Viyan Peyman, a Kurdish Iranian woman who left her home to volunteer in the Kurdish resistance forces and lost her life in 2015 to heartbreaking laments including the final piece "Tears of Singal" which mourns the murder of thousands of Yazidis.
We will also hear Mory Kante's final album, from 2012, and the latest Music from Saharan WhatsApp and more.
"My Sunset-Land Rojava" is available on Bandcamp, limited edition CD and downloads.

For 2020, the small label Sahel Sounds is releasing one EP every month from a different group in the Sahel, all recorded locally by the musicians, probably using a smart phone(!), and transferred to Sahel Sounds using WhatsApp. Sahel sounds releases the EP for downloading for one month only. The June release features two artists from Bamako, Luka Productions, a popular producer and artist in the Malian hip-hop scene and Kandiafa who plays the ngoni, so old and new together. The EP is only available for a month on Bandcamp!

Mory Kante's final album, recorded in 2012, came 8 years after his all-acoustic album "Sabou". This saw a return to big band sound he was more familiar with. Both these two last albums really cap an incredible career. You can listen to my recent tribute to this great artist here: https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/47929.html |

Backing female voices are often a significant contribution to what makes this music great, and they are great when solo as well, as we hear with Mamani Keita, who has sung backup for Salif Keita many times. |
