Abdel Aziz El Mubarak, Ballake Sissoko, Constantinople, Beethoven and more

Today we being with a farewell to the popular Sudanese singer Abdel Aziz El Mubarak who died on Feb. 6th. He became very popular in Sudan in the 1970's and usually performed with a big band, today we hear him in a much more intimate recording with El Mubarak accompanying his warm and rich singing on Oud with percussion and accordion. We also hear from Ballake Sissoko and his trio 3MA which comprises himself on kora, along with Driss El Maloumi on Oud, and Rajery on valiha. More music from Constantinople who are playing tonight in Ottawa with First Nations and Tuvan musicians(!) https://musicandbeyond.ca/event/constantinople-souffles-breathings/ Maybe some Beethoven to round things off.

two weeks ago on a flight from the US to Paris, the unique custom-made Kora of the great master Ballake Sissoko, was completely destroyed by the American Customs. The label No Format under which he has released several albums in his large discography, has started a GoFundMe campain to raise funds to replace his kora. He was touring with his trio 3MA.

I was reading an article by the period instrument conductor John Eliot Gardiner on his approach to Beethoven and it made me take another look at Gardiner's recordings of Beethoven which were mostly done in the 90's. I thought the most striking point he made was that "Beethoven's orchestra never really existed; it was a figment of his vivid aural imagination. The performances he attended and went through the motions of conducting were with pickup orchestras made up of rather unmotivated Viennese musicians sight-reading this new, incredibly complicated and challenging music on only one rehearsal." Gardiner created his own orchestra the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique modelled on the famous Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire in Paris which was founded in 1828 a year after Beethoven's death. This orchestra was highly motivated and led by François-Antoine Habeneck and underwent thorough rehearsal and revolutionary techniques like unified bowings. They presented the Beethoven symphonies in Paris for the first time between 1828 and 1832, and by all accounts were highly accurate and tremendous performances of these works. Paris at that time was the epicenter of Romantic music and so many young and great Romantic composers, musicians, artists like Berlioz, Schumann, Liszt and many more heard Beethoven's symphonies for the first time at these series. The influence and importance of these symphonies performed in this series in Paris cannot be overstated in European music.
