Kiya Tabassian of Constantinople will be joining me to discuss his musical tour of West and North Africa and his upcoming Ottawa concert "Breathings" with First Nations and Tuvan musicians. Music from Saharan WhatsApp 02

I have become convinced that there is perhaps no more adventurous musical traveler than Kiya Tabassian, founder and director of Constantinople. He has just returned from a 15 day tour of Senegal, Mauritania, and Algeria with Constantinople and Ablaye Cissoko, and will be in Ottawa next week performing with First Nations and Tuvan singers, 3rd in a season of four concerts, the first with Baroque ensemble Caprice, the second with Greek singer Savina Yannatou, the fourth concert in June will be with the Corsican vocal ensemble A Filetta. This comes after their 2017-2018 4 concert series with Kinan Azmeh, Shashank Subramanyam, Maarja Nuut, and Kayhan Kalhor. It is almost dizzying the diversity of musical traditions and musicians Kiya Tabassian plays with, and perhaps it is not surprising this has come from a Canadian musician. Next Thursday Feb 20th Constantinople will be presenting their project "Breathings" which features Mi-gmaq First Nations singer from the Gesgapegiag in southern Gaspé, and a singer from Russian Republic of Tuva. https://musicandbeyond.ca/event/constantinople-souffles-breathings/ June 5th concert with A Filetta; https://musicandbeyond.ca/event/constantinople-clair-obscur-light-shadow/

Last week on a flight from the US to Paris, the unique custom-made Kora of the great master Ballake Sissoko, was completely destroyed by the American Customs. The label No Format under which he has released several albums in his large discography, has started a GoFundMe campain to raise funds to replace his kora.

For 2020, the small label Sahel Sounds is releasing one EP every month from a different group in the Sahel, all recorded locally by the musicians, probably using a smart phone(!), and transferred to Sahel Sounds using WhatsApp. Sahel sounds releases the EP for downloading for one month only. The 2nd release just came out today, from the mother-son duo of Oumou Diabate and Kara Show Koumba Friri from Mali. They just recorded this music in their home 2 days ago! The recording quality may be a bit rough, but the immediacy, and intimacy of the recording makes it superb, this is what a Griot family home in Bamako, Mali sounds like!

VERY COOL INTERVIEW!!! Will definitely try to get out to the 'Breathings' next Thurs. It has been on my list for a while ... Well, now it is at front of line and still trying to line-jump. Just hope i can pull it off. Sounds from all over, AND Tuvan throat singing. What could possibly go wrong?! q;^)

The Tuvan throat singer is very renowned! I won't mention who, I am not sure if it's supposed to be a surprise :) But yes, Constantinople's concerts are a must-see!

On it like an unfortunate analogy that will become politically incorrect some day!! Looks good to go thus far ...
