The NAC Orchestra, like most orchestras around the world program a couple of Beethoven symphonies every season, but it is still a tremendour pleasure to hear all 9 symphonies performed live in a short period. The NAC Orchestra is opening their 2018-2019 season with Alexander Shelley conducting a cycle of all 9 symphonies in 5 concerts over 9 days. They begin tonight with the first three and conclude next Saturday with the 9th.

Today we will hear Beethoven's radical 3rd symphony, in one of the most expressive, extreme, and emotionally turbulent recordings with Wilhelm Furtwangler's 1944 recording.

THANKS for the Ludwig Van, David! Certainly some of my most favourite music of all. Aside: My Mom got me, as a birthday present, a box set of all 9, a very long time ago now. (Philharmonia Orch. / Otto Klemperer). This was just after i had acquired my first really good sound system. The neighbours were probably not impressed. It remains one of my most precious pieces of wax. Oh, and spouse Peggy just said: "that Beethoven could sure make a big statement!" ;^)
