Music of the World Cup: Nations from South, Central, and North America, with a focus on Pablo Ziegler; farewell to Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

Continuing with more music from nations in the 2018 World Cup, looking at the teams from Concacaf (North and Central America and the Carribeans) and Conmebol (South America). Music from Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Brazil, Columbia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Mexico with a special look at Argentinian pianist and composer Pablo Ziegler. Pablo Ziegler was the pianist in Astor Piazzolla's group for over a decade from 1978 until Piazzolla's retirement in 1989. He has continued in his mentor's path but with greater inclusion of Jazz in his Piazzolla-inspired nuevo-tango. He is a master musician performing both his own compositions and Piazzolla's. I have seen him live before and he is extraordinary. We have the incredible fortune of two upcoming appearances in Ottawa at Music & Beyond! He will be performing with Thirteen Strings on July 5th and solo on July 6th. Absolutely not to be missed! https://musicandbeyond.ca/event/pablo-ziegler-piano/ https://musicandbeyond.ca/event/pablo-ziegler-tango-nuevo-july-6/ We also say farewell to the great Soviet/Russian conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky, he was most famous for championing a generation of great Soviet composers who were troublesome for Soviet officialdom, both within and without the Soviet Union including Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Giya Kancheli, Edison Denisov, Rodion Schedrin. He was also a friend and great interpretor of Schostakovich, and gave the premieres of his 4th and 12th symphonies outside the Soviet Union, and revived his opera The Nose. In Rozhdestvensky, these composers did not only have a fervent champion, they had a tremendous conductor as well. He died aged 87 on June 16th.

For Brazil, not your typical music today, but the unique experimental group Uakti, founded by Marco Antonio Guimaraes. Classically trained cellist, he has spent most of his career leading and composing for Uakti, which uses unique instruments he builds out of a wide variety of materials.

Gennady Rozhdestvensky premiered many works by Alfred Schnittke, including his incredible, chaotic 1st symphony. Schnittke's 6th Concerto Grosso for violin, piano, and string orchestra was dedicated to Rozhdestvensky's wife, pianist Viktoria Postnikova, and Gennady conducted his wife and his son Sasha in the premiere and again in this recording.
