Kamancello performing live in studio! Speaking with Kiya Tabassian of Constantinople and their upcoming 4 part concert series. A look at the NAC's Ideas of North Festival.
Kamancello is an instrumental duo from Toronto comprising Raphael Weinroth-Browne on cello and Shahriyar Jamshidi on kamancheh. Raphael Weinroth-Browne is an Ottawa native who studied cello at the University of Ottawa; Shahriya Jamshidi hails from Kermanshah, Iran, and studied at the Art University of Tehran. As Kamancello, they perform primarily improvised music that is profound in its beauty and emotional richness. Music that is simply breathtaking. Kamancello are celebrating the release of their self-titled debut album with a performance at Pressed on Gladstone this evening. We will hear a taste of their wonderful music with a live-in-studio performance.

This Sunday, Music & Beyond will be presenting the first concert in a series by Constantinople called "The Four Skies, the Four Seasons". This series will feature four concerts by Constantinople all at the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat, each with very special guests. Kiya Tabassian, founder of Constantinople, will be joining me to introduce these concerts.

We will also look at the NAC's Ideas of North Festival, centered primarily on the music of Jean Sibelius, which I am very happy about, as conductor Alexander Shelley and principal guest conductor John Storgards have really elevated the NAC Orchestra with several superb performances of Sibelius last season. The festival features four of his 7 supreme symphonies, many of his symphonic poems, his violin concerto, but also features a couple of extreme rarities for Ottawa: contemporary Finnish composers Kalevi Aho and Kaija Saariaho with the former's 14th symphony performed by the visiting Lapland Chamber Orchestra from Finland, and the latter's violin concerto "Graal Theatre".
