ECM has released a new set of 4 concerts given by Keith Jarrett in a week in Italy in October, 1996. We will hear all four concerts in four programs. The first concert was recorded in Modena.
These four solo concerts became the final concerts featuring Keith Jarrett's famous long, unbroken set of completely improvised music. Jarrett was suffering from undiagnosed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and after these concerts he stopped playing for 2 years. At the time, Keith Jarrett thought his career was over. Thankfully this was not the case, but it did prove to be the end of the long unbroken improvised concerts for which he had been famous for. The 13 concerts in this format recorded and released by ECM from 1973 to 1995 are a supreme pinnacle of music for me, so for an unexpected four additional concerts I am extremely grateful.
In the notes for this release Keith Jarrett speaks about studying Sufism during that period, which I find fascinating because I have said for many years how these performances are so much like Sufi ritual on the piano!
