Ibrahim Maalouf and his transcription of Oum Kalthoum's "Alf Leila Wa Leila" for jazz quintet
Today we hear the magnificent 2016 album from Ibrahim Maalouf, "Kalthoum", his adaption for jazz quintet of Oum Kalthoum's famous song "Alf Leila Wa Leila" (the original heard on last week's show). Ibrahim Maalouf grew up in Beirut being taught by his father to sing all of Kalthoum's songs, and it has been a dream of his to play her songs on the trumpet. He shows off his tremendous artistry and skill as he evokes Kalthoum's voice on the quarter-tone trumpet. He is joined by German pianist Frank Woeste, Americans Clarence Penn on drums, Larry Grenadier on double bass, Mark Turner on saxophone.
He is appearing in only 6 shows in North America this month with the quintet playing this piece. San Francisco, the Monterey Jazz Festival, Columbus, New York City, and two stops in Canada, Quebec City tonight and Montreal Friday!
