Annual Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan memorial show. Music from Amjad Sabri, a leading light of Qawwali who was assassinated in June.
The 3rd week of August every year we remember one of the greatest artists the world has produced, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who died far too young August 16th 1997. Sadly, 2016 has been a heartbreaking year for Qawwali, as a leading light of the current generation of Qawwali singers, Amjad Sabri, 39 year old heir of his prominent centuries old Qawwali family, was assassinated in Karachi on June 22nd by the Pakistan Taliban. This was not just the murder of a man, but a horrific act of violence against culture and the very best of humanity. It takes decades of extensive study and practice to develop the skill and knowledge Amjad Sabri possessed. Nusrat’s death at a young age from liver, kidney, and heart failure was tragic and an immesureable loss, Amjad Sabri’s murder was a deliberate, evil act, unforgiveable.
Pause today and let your heart soar with the captivating voices of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad Sabri.
