A retrospective of Nana Vasconcelos and Ali Farka Toure; Sam Shalabi & Stefan Christoff; a bit of Irish music

Today we take a retrospective of two incredible music careers, that of the astonishing Brazilian percussionist and composer Nana Vasconcelos who died on March 9th; and the great Malian singer, guitarist, bluesman Ali Farka Toure who died 10 years ago on March 7th. Towering musicians, they are and will be sorely missed. We will also hear some of the beautiful collaboration from oud player Sam Shalabi and pianist Stefan Christoff who are in Ottawa tonight for their album release party. The concert is a mere $12 and they are joined by cellist Mark Molnar who will be opening the show. http://www.ckcufm.com/node/689 And perhaps a wee bit of Irish music too...

MY PLEASURE David! Ample pent up world-ish music for a couple shows, even though I could not reliably pull off the first week.

And, just joining in unfortunately. You have played some of my favourite Ali Farka Touré. Niafunké, I think, is my favourite recording of his over time. Just the sound of the place it was recorded -- big stone and mud cave in the middle of nowhere; natural reverb, amp humm and all. Thanks OnDemand later...

As Toumani Diabate said "He's one of the great, great, great musicians".
