David Dalle
Thursday March 10th, 2016 with PeterB
PeterB hosts today, with a collection of "new classical" picks -- whatever that means. Terry Riley Mali style, random new age mixtures, Frank Zappa, and George Martin.
PeterB has the distinct honour of hosting today's David Dalle program. There goes quality control...
We will explore some greatly under-appreciated "new classical" ... Whatever the heck that means, really. We'll feature Terry Riley's ground breaking 'In C', Mali style, as well as Frank Zappa's much under-looked and mis-understood classical side. A sandwich of jazzy electronica and fusions. And, a Good Night to George Martin.
Enjoy. And PLEASE hit us up on the Interactive Thingy (over there ==>)
Starting off with a personal fave, to set a mood, and refresh your ears. Abdullah Ibrahim, aka Dollar Brand. Sit back, and relax. |

Terry Riley's totally ground-breaking minimalist / chaos-mathematical / cyclic, 'In C' ... MALI STYLE!!
Here's how 'In C' works, basically. There is a constant rhythm drone on middle C, that drives the whole piece from start to end and kinda makes it all hang together. The drone is the first, and last, heard, and always present. Overlaid are 53 sequences of tones, ranging from single notes to multiple bars, to be played in rough order at the individual musicians' choosing, all in key of C, played at any speed, with any number or mix of musicians and instruments. There is no set sequence. There might be a conductor ... or not. If I got the math right, that means there are pretty much infinite variations possible, and ranging from just a few minutes to until all the players drop dead from exhaustion, or life expectancy. This is a STUNNING rendition, and one of my personal favourites. And, there are a great many more out there. Drop what you are doing right now, and grab your best headphones! |
