Today we hear the famed Dastan Ensemble in a rare instrumental recording with the enigmatic title "A Call Beneath the Ashes". Dastan is comprised of Hamid Motebassem on Tar, Hossein Behroozinia on Barbat, Said Farajpoori on Kemenche, Pejman Hadadi on percussion, Behnam Smani on percussion. This dramatic and passionate piece demonstrates the Dastan's mature virtuosity and artistry which has contribute greatly to putting Persian instrumental writing on an equal level as the great singers they often perform with.
The Dastan ensemble will be performing in Ottawa on Saturday September 19th with singer Mahdieh Mohammad-Khani. Ottawa has become a regular tour stop for Dastan and their concerts have consistently been among the very best in Ottawa's musical life. Go see them!!

We also hear from pianist Vijay Iyer and his trio with bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore and their 2015 release "Break Stuff". Vijay Iyer was in Ottawa this past weekend and it was my first opportunity to hear him live and he was stellar!
