Part I of a look at Nana Vasconcelos; new album from Tinariwen, Astor Piazzolla's explorations in funk

Today we hear part I of a look at the great Brazilian master percussionist and composer Nana Vasconcelos, who for over four decades has been one of the leading Brazilian musicians in musical exploring and experimenting, playing with a wide range of Brazilian and international jazz, classical, and other musicians. Today we hear his remarkable 1995 album Storytelling, which taken as a whole, is an extremely adventurous tone poem exploring his origins in North Eastern Brazil. The music from North Eastern Brazil is not as famous as that from the South like the Samba from Rio, and it uses different rhythms such as 5/4 and 7/4. We also hear the recent album from Tinariwen "Emmaar" and some of the more obscure music by Astor Piazzolla from the late 1970's when he brought some funk into his Nuevo Tango. And finally, some live recordings of Sun Ra and his Arkestra, today would be the 100th birthday of this very far out Jazz great.
