In some ways, the deep and rich continuous music of the Wagner orchestra could be seen as the ancestor of the hypnotic Deep Listening of Pauline Oliveros. We hear Wagner's famous Prelude from Tristan und Isolde in a remarkable transcription for accordeon, piano, and a quartet of strings from Uri Caine recorded live in Venice, in an unintentional agreement with Oliveros' ideas about Deep Listening, Uri Caine recorded it in public outdoors, to capture the environmental sounds of Venice, which was variably a place of exile, retreat, and vacation for Wagner, and where he died suddenly in 1882. His body was rowed along the canals in a funeral gondola before being brought back to Bayreuth. Liszt who was present with Wagner in Venice when he died, wrote two piano elegies for Wagner after his death reflecting this scene entitled the Lugubrious Gondola, one of which he also published in a version for cello and piano. |
