Music of Constantine Caravassilis with guest Christina Petrowska Quilico
Today's show looks at the piano music of Canadian composer Constantine Caravassilis, ten pieces in a cycle of five Rhapsodies and five Fantasias collected together. These dramatic and beautiful pieces in the words of Caravassilis: "The unifying thread amidst all of these works is my continuous search for beauty as well as the exhilarating joy I feel when I seek meaning in experiences beyond those found in everyday life." We are joined by the pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico who premiered and recorded this music.

| Postcard from Smyrna was inspired by Middle Eastern music and specifically an improvised, instrumental Taqsim in Hijaz mode. The result is a gorgeous piano piece which is much closer to its source material than Romanticized Eastern music of the 19th century. |
