Hi Ryan! After hearing "the Returner", I spent a few minutes searching my iTunes and googling, because I'm pretty sure I've heard the tune in the movie soundtrack of The Triplets Of Belleville. Couldn't find what I was looking for, but there's an eerie similarity. Any provenance of the Allison Russell song available?

I'm trying to figure that out, B. I think that's part of it. It sounds a little weaker and strained. I hear that more often with singers in their senior years though. She is still young.
