Music of Lubomyr Melnyk II

Lubomyr Melnyk is one of the greatest hidden musical treasures I know. Lubomyr Melnyk was a young, talented pianist in the early 1970's when he encountered Terry Riley's "In C" and had an epiphany. He heard infinite, continuous music in this legendary piece (intended for an ensemble), and he wanted to translate it to the solo piano. Much like Liszt as a young man hearing Paganini, Melnyk lived and breathed nothing but the piano to develop his unique technique. Melnyk's compositions and improvisations take the repetitive patterns of minimalist music and combines it with extraordinarily lush harmonies and rich melodies. The effect is miraculous. Music so beautiful with such intense melancholy. The too humble Melnyk has spent decades on the fringes of the musical world, playing to small audiences, but in the past couple of years, audiences have started finding him. Today we will hear from his recent album "Rivers and Streams" as well as from a private recording from a performance he gave in Toronto in 2003.
