Ludovico Einaudi Taranta Project; Southern Italian folk music meets Mali

Today's show is centered around a new album "Taranta Project" from Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi who was invited to Salento in Southeast Italy and the centre of the old Italian folk tradition of Taranta (or Tarantella) music. Traditionally a very dynamic, fast, and rythmic music played with accordion, percussion, and mandolin; Einaudi expands this traditional core with orchestra and guest musicians from far afield such as Ballake Sissoko from Mali, Juldeh Camara from Gambia, Mercan Dede from Turkey. The result is a glorious multicultural celebration with richly layered textures, repetitive and intense rythmns and climaxes with definite hints to the propulsive music of Philip Glass. We will also hear from Einaudi Lodovico's duet album with Ballake Sissoko for piano and Kora as well as other music from West Africa and around the Mediterranean. This is intensely joyful music.
