The clarinet and tenor player caught the tail end of the Swing era with the Woody Herman band, for which he composed the well-known "Four Brothers", and played cool jazz in his own distinctive way in the 1950's. The undertone of abstraction that came into his playing in the late 1950's was fully developed on the recordings heard tonight.
