Born in post-Bop, Eskelin soon embarked on free form music. Some critics call his music as taxing on the listener as on the players. Obviously, his musical ideas are complex but retain some smoothness that come from his post-Bop era and the fact that his tenor saxophone sound is relatively old fashioned.
