Carla Bley & Paul Haines- Escalator Over The Hill
Has anyone ever made a 3-lp recording of consistently excellent new music? Carla Bley didn't here, but still - what a genuinely original, fascinating work. Released on the Jazz Composers Orchestra Association label in 1971, and re-issued as 2 cd's in 1998 on ECM, it features a vast cast and wildly-varying musical styles, along with the lyrical weirdness of Paul Haines. Or, as one dazzled reviewer put it, "an impossible and unreproduceable gallimaufry of pluralistic aesthetics." It's hard to argue with that.
