John Tchicai - Pierre Dørge duo, 1981
John Tchicai has been involved with Jazz avant-garde since the early '60s, playing with Archie Shepp and Don Cherry in the New York Contemporary Five, Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and many others. However, his style has always been very different from his peers that specialized in outpours of notes, multiphonics, etc... Instead, John Tchicai concentrated on a lyrical melodic approach. So one may wonder why he attracted such interest from hard core avant-garde musicians? The answer may be simple, he was African (His father was Congolese) and thus he had first hand experience with pure African music with its melodic and polyrythmic systems, something any American avant-garde musician craved for.
Even more important is that John Tchicai has released an long list of recordings. Tonight we will focus on his duo work with guitarist Pierre Dørge for the SteepleChase label recorded in 1981.Pierre Dørge was leading the New Jungle Orchestra at that time.
