Don Cherry's Complete Communion as interpreted by Don Cherry and Tom Varner
Tom Varner recorded SECOND COMMUNION on September 28 & 29, 2000. It pays homage to Don Cherry's COMPLETE COMMUNION. Tonight we contrast and compare Don Cherry's version and Tom Varner's version.
Don Cherry recorded COMPLETE COMMUNION (his first recording as a leader) on December 24, 1965 for the Blue Note label. Don Cherry played cornet, Leandro "Gato" Barbieri played tenor sax, Henry Grimes played bass, and Ed Blackwell played drums. Complete Communion is a seamless four part suite. |

SECOND COMMUNION IS A HOMAGE TO DON CHERRY AND HIS FIRST RECORDING AS A LEADER (RECORDED 35 YEARS BEFORE). THIS RECORDING IS AUGMENTED WITH A GUITAR AND A FRENCH HORN BUT MAINTAINS THE PIANO-LESS FORMAT. IT NEVER FEELS CROWDED. EACH MUSICIAN MAKES THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS AND LAYS OUT AT APPROPRIATE POINTS. THE PIECES FOLLOW THE ORIGINAL FAIRLY CLOSELY THOUGH THE LINEUP IS OFTEN CHANGED.Tom Varner plays French Horn, Tony Malaby plays tenor sax, Dave Ballou plays cornet, Pete McCann plays guitar, Cameron Brown plays bass, and Matt Wilson plays drums. SECOND COMMUNION was recorded September 28 & 29, 2000 for the Omnitone record label. |
