As usual, during my vacation my path crossed some several CD stores…
Here is a sample of CDs I picked up in Strasburg, Basel, Nantes and Château d’Oléron:
1. Roland Kirk in Copenhagen, 1963. A very Free-Jazz oriented session under the cover of straight ahead Jazz.
2. Bojan Zufikarpasic, a Bosnian pianist living in Paris for quite a while but never forgetting his balkanic roots.
3. Art Blakey, Caravan in 1961 with then young Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter.
4. Tim Berne’s ECM Snakeoil CD, a proof that Free Jazz can become commercial.
5. The Firehouse Five. What ? what is a New Orleans Jazz CD doing in the middle of Free Jazz? They just play so beautifully, no one can resist.
6. Yoichiro Kita, Ninja Jockey, trumpet and laptop computer. Now I understand why Canadian trumpeter Craig Pedersen does things like that too. They just can’t resist…
7. Don Cherry, Complete Communion demonstrates that Don can play without Ornette.
8. Thelonious Monk, unissued live at Newport with Monk playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and an introduction by the Duke himself.
