Rabble Without A Cause
Wednesday March 25th, 2015 with Bernard Stepien
Portuguese Free Jazz flutist Carlos Bechegas

The Flute has been traditionally used rarely in Jazz. Notorious exceptions are Frank Wess in Count Basie’s orchestra and of course Rahsaan Roland Kirk near Free Jazz explosions on flute. The flute is of course a mellow musical instrument, so no chance to take over an acoustic New Orleans band in the early years of Jazz. Amplification partly solved that but in Free Jazz, the volume factor can be sometimes a problem especially with the Sheets of Sound concept. Post-Free musicians like James Newton partly solved the problem by even playing non-amplified in chamber music like bands. Newer generations of flutists are still rare. Portuguese flutist Carlos Bechegas got extra support from Free Jazz giants such as Evan Parker. Tonight we will explore Carlos Bechegas’ Trio IK Zs – 3 CD from 1993 where he uses early electronics against acoustic (unamplified) flute.
