Lori Freedman’s bass clarinet playing is at the cross-roads of Free Jazz and contemporary music (classical avant-garde). While this definition could mean that she plays both styles separately according to engagements opportunities, this case is more a case of fusion between two styles. Improvisation is central to her music, but the peer pressure from composers that extensively write for her pull her somewhat into the classical field. In any case, all of that doesn’t harm because the immense sense of structure that results from it is plainly delightful if not inspiring. So, one question you could ask is why does Lori Freedman attract so much attention from people that are usually considered as elitists? The obvious cultivation of texture that enhances presence makes her sound already irresistible but probably the most determining factor is her sense of drama that make her music as enjoyable as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller movie. Her latest project that will open in Winnipeg, Virtuosity of Excess tells it all. Tonight, we will take a closer look at two of her recordings: Plumb and Bridge.
