Duke Ellington was a great composer (with considerable help from Billy Strayhorn) and his band was a rich palette of instrumental colours. Count Basie's music was much simpler, but his soloists were outstanding--especially Lester Young. In the second hour we'll listen to Phineas Newborn Jr., considered by Leonard Feather as one of the three greatest jazz pianists ever.
