The 2024 Juno nominees and a tribute to Eleanor Collins

Tonight’s show is an all-Canadian celebration, including all of this year’s nominees for Junos in the jazz instrumental categories. Before we listen to the nominees, we’ll take a brief pause to remember the passing of a Canadian jazz legend - Eleanor Collins. She was a singer who passed away on March 3rd at the age of 104. Her voice had been compared to Lena Horne's. She lived in British Columbia and never succumbed to the allure of a career in the US, preferring to live and work in Canada. She is best known for her CBC television performances. She was the first black woman to host her own television variety show. For more on her extraordinary career, see https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/eleanor-collins-emc We will start the show off with a track she recorded in 2004 at the age of 84 with the group Mother of Pearl.
