The Earl "Fatha" Hines Revival: the 60th anniversary of the 1964 concert that revived his career

"I'm an explorer if I might use that expression. I'm looking for something all the time. And oft-times I get lost. And people that are around me a lot know that when they see me smiling, they know I'm lost and I'm trying to get back. But it makes it much more interesting because then you do things that surprise yourself. And after you hear the recording, it makes you a little bit happy too because you say, "Oh, I didn't know I could do THAT!" Earl Hines in 1975

Thanks for listening, Robert. Yes, he took classical piano training as a child, although I’m not sure for how long.

Would you say that we can hear the influence of stride piano playing ?

Yes, I think so. Jelly Roll Morton was an early influence.

Hey Ian, do you know where "Fatha" came from?

The orchestra members used to call him Father - and would call that out when he arrived on the stage. He was a band leader with firm discipline and expectations of band members - which is why I think the called him “Father”

From wikipedia: Disagreement persists over the origin of the name "Fatha". The most common account is that a radio announcer (some say Ted Pearson), possibly after Hines had accused him of being drunk, announced, "Here comes 'Fatha' Hines through the deep forest with his children", "Deep Forest" being the band's signature tune. Others have suggested it was because Hines had "...given birth to a style—more than a style, a virtual language—of jazz piano" Perhaps Hines' "firm discipline and expectations" included radio hosts being sober!

Charlie Parker was fired by Hines for not being punctual, even though Parker had resorted to sleeping under the bandstand to make sure he was there on time.
