Jazz from Albert Ayler to Zeke Zarchy
Another program put together for your listening pleasure by David Fraser. This time, it's music by artists with alliterative names: 'This show is based on the questionable premise that while characteristics such as artistry, dedication, inspiration, and hard work are all good, what is really needed to succeed in jazz is a name that alliterates, such as Buddy Bolden, Bunny Berigan, Cab Calloway, or Red Rodney. The programming tonight will be in alphabetical order, starting naturally with the great saxophonist Albert Ayler and ending predictably with the fine albeit less well known trumpeter Zeke Zarchy. Sadly, the two-hour cap on the show forces us to skip some letters of the alphabet, and perhaps we linger too long on the letter B.'

C is for 'Charlie Chan'. Confused listener thinks, “Whaddya mean ‘Charlie Chan’? Wasn’t he a film detective or something like that?” Well, the great bebop pioneer Charlie Parker was billed, for contractual reasons, as “Charlie Chan” on the initial release of Jazz at Massey Hall (1953). Parker was under contract to another recording company, and adopted the pseudonym Charlie Chan for this recording - as a nod both to the film detective and to his wife, Chan Parker. Interesting that Bird chose a name that alliterates … |
