Pianist Andrew Hill was a difficult artist to follow since he made unpredictable appearances in public. Nonetheless, his music was well known and he received wide acclaim from the critics. He was known to be both a Be Bop and Free Jazz musician, mostly influenced by Thelonious Monk. He studied in the 50’s with classical avant-gardist composer Paul Hindemith. Coda Jazz Magazine editor Bill Smith told me that one fine day he was studying with Monk and Monk asked him to play something to see where he was at. At the end of the demonstration, Monk told him: “play the same thing with half of the amount of notes”. He surely followed this advice. Tonight we will play “Les Trinitaires” CD recorded in 1998, the first concert he gave in France since 1975. All of this while all his American colleges were enjoying wall to wall welcome at the 185 Jazz festival that take place all over France.
