In A Mellow Tone
Wednesday April 30th, 2014 with Alnoor Allidina
Gil Evans in the 80s

Gil Evans Part 3: Co-Host Alnoor Allidina further explores the recordings of Gil Evans, the great Canadian composer, arranger, band-leader, and pianist. On tonight's program we hear works from the mid-seventies and beyond. Music will range from big-band sessions to duo settings (with Lee Konitz and Steve Lacy).
Ian Ernest Gilmore "Gil" Evans was born in Toronto in 1912 and passed away in 1988 at the age of 75. He grew up in California and after the mid-40s, spent much of his life in New York City. Many jazz fans are quite familiar with his early collaborations: Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain etc.. He also recorded a number of very strong albums under his own name, and in previous programs we have heard works from the 1950s-1970s. Today, we focus mainly on his work from the 1980s with a seventies throwback near the end of the program. Enjoy!
