Gil Evans Part 3: Co-Host Alnoor Allidina further explores the recordings of Gil Evans, the great Canadian composer, arranger, band-leader, and pianist. On tonight's program we hear works from the mid-seventies and beyond. Music will range from big-band sessions to duo settings (with Lee Konitz and Steve Lacy).
| Ian Ernest Gilmore "Gil" Evans was born in Toronto in 1912 and passed away in 1988 at the age of 75. He grew up in California and after the mid-40s, spent much of his life in New York City. Many jazz fans are quite familiar with his early collaborations: Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain etc.. He also recorded a number of very strong albums under his own name, and in previous programs we have heard works from the 1950s-1970s. Today, we focus mainly on his work from the 1980s with a seventies throwback near the end of the program. Enjoy! |
