Roots and Rhythms
Wednesday February 1st, 2017 with Renny
It's the first day of Black History Month so what better than ROOTS REGGAE & THE ROOTS OF REGGAE. The best of Kingston, Jamaica's BEVERLY'S RECORDS. (Mainly from my big sister's collection, thanks sis'!)

Beverly's Records began in 1961 and tragically folded in 1971 with the sudden passing of the owner, Leslie Kong. He documented the best in ska, rocksteady and reggae. He took Jamaican music to an international audience.

Nice comparison with Toots and Otis Redding. Had never thought about it but they can both do that thing where they sing sweet then turn on the vocal gritty overdrive.

Thanks Xpizto. Both Redding and Hibbert had their start singing gospel in church. "vocal gritty overdrive" I'll have to use that description one day.

"toots in memphis" is a pretty solid album that really digs into that connection with Otis. Great playlist, Renny, of course.

Hey Paul. The "King" Kong Compilation was the one you picked up for me in Montreal all those years ago. Thanks for that!
