Water access issues are nothing new to the Canadian paddling community. Unfortunately private property absolutely can extend to the shoreline, and we often loose access to Portage routes, scouting sports ahead of rapids, or even simply get on and off the river. Organizations like Whitewater Ontario spend much effort negotiating land access with land owners, who have privacy and insurance concerns. And yes, people drinking, leaving trash, and pissing and shitting everywhere 🤷 As for large rivers like the Ottawa where the level fluctuates so drastically, I'm not sure if the property would extend to the high water mark only, making the exposed beach in the summer public. Hard to say, would to look at the deeds, as you say. Also, since there are no public washrooms, calls of nature are inevitable. Nevermind the dogs...

In some American states, property owners can even own the river bottom!! It is not unheard of for property owners to string fences/barbed wire right across the river.
