Not mere child's play of the common folk
A number of the folk tunes Béla Bartók used in For Children originally had quite ribald lyrics that weren't suitable for young ears, although, of course, quite common in folk culture. Bartók was only interested in using the melodies, and there was no chance of the lyrics being printed alongside the compositions. Still, in the dignified neighbourhoods of Budapest over a century ago, I would not be surprised if the following scenario did occur: Little nine-year-old Jozef is visiting his grandparents and wants to play for them the new piece he learned from For Children.
Grandpa Tibor: Say! I know that tune! When I was young we sang these words to it...
Grandma Marta: Shut up, Tibor.
