The Symphony Concertante is a bit of an amorphous genre. It is neither Symphony nor is it a Concerto yet it has elements of both. It is a transition genre connecting the Baroque Concerto Grosso to both the Classical Concerto and Classical Symphony. The fact that there are soloists but these soloists are equal amongst the other performers is an aspect that appealed greatly to the musicians of the French Revolution.
This dichotomy of styles and of solo versus supporting role is what adds to the undefined structure of the Symphony Concertante. The ambiguity would probably get the genre banned in present day Florida.
